There is a nice sandy beach in Matala.
Matala has become famous for the artificial caves, carved into the rocks, north of the coast. These caves were first inhabited during the prehistoric period. Tombs found in the caves date from Greek, Roman and Early Christian times.
During the 70's the caves were hosting an international hippie community. Great musicians like Cat Stevens and Joni Mitchell have been here for some time composing beautiful songs about the beauty of the bay of Matala..

Crete island is the largest of Greece and is located in the south of the Aegean Sea. Crete is one of the most famous Greek islands. It is separated in 4 prefectures: Chania, Heraklion, Lassithi and Rethymno. The island has everything to offer: mountainous landscapes, a coast with many beautiful beaches and rocky coves, beautiful towns and charming villages and harbors, excellent food, ruins of the Minoan Civilization, one of the greatest civilization ever, an exciting nightlife…
MUSIC OF CRETE. The music of Crete is a traditional form of Greek folk music called κρητικά (kritika). The lýra is the dominant folk instrument on the island; it is a three-stringed fiddle similar to the Pontian kemenche. It is often accompanied by the Cretan lute (laoúto), which is similar to both an oud and a mandolin. Thanassis Skordalos, Psarantonis and Kostas Moundakis are the most renowned players of the lýra.
Michalis Tzouganakis performing a series of "syrtos" tunes while singing "mantinades". Video from the show "Stin Ygeia Mas", which was aired on 19th of November 2005 on NET channel (Greece). What to say about Michalis Tzouganakis. He must be one of the five best lute players in the whole world at the moment. His singing is extremely passionate without being cheap. By far my favourite Cretan musician (alive!).
